Update Electrum ABC safely.
Stable release 5.5.1. Updating replaces the app — your wallet file, seed, and balance stay where they are.
Download from the right place.
Only electrum-abc.org. Search-ad clones exist.
Check the URL first.
Confirm your browser bar reads electrum-abc.org before you click Download.
Wallet file stays put.
The installer replaces the app only. Your seed and balance are untouched.
Six steps. Five minutes. Same wallet on the other side.
- Step 01
Back up first
Confirm your 12-word seed is written down offline. An update should never cost you a wallet, but verifying your backup before any maintenance is a free habit worth keeping.
- Step 02
Quit Electrum ABC
Close the running application. The installer cannot replace files that are in use.
- Step 03
Download the new release
Visit the official download page and pull 5.5.1 for your operating system. Only download from electrum-abc.org — never from a search-ad result.
- Step 04
Confirm the source
Check that your browser bar shows electrum-abc.org before you click download. Lookalike domains and search-ad clones are the most common risk during an update.
- Step 05
Run the installer
Launch the installer and follow the prompts. On macOS, drag the new app into Applications, replacing the old one. On Linux, replace the AppImage or extract the new tarball.
- Step 06
Reopen the wallet
Launch Electrum ABC. Your wallet file opens with the same password, the same seed, and the same balance. If a wallet-format migration runs, accept it — the old file is kept as a backup.
An update can't lose your XEC — a missing backup can.
The wallet update path is safe by design. The dangerous moment is the one where you realize the seed was never written down. Before any maintenance, verify your backup.
How do I update Electrum ABC?+
Download the latest installer from the official download page at electrum-abc.org, then run it. Your wallet file is preserved automatically — you keep the same seed, the same addresses, and the same balance. The current stable release is 5.5.1.
Will updating Electrum ABC delete my wallet?+
No. The installer only replaces the application binary. Wallet files live in a separate data directory (e.g. ~/.electrum-abc/wallets on Linux) and are untouched by an update. As long as you have your seed phrase backed up, an update can never lose your XEC.
Do I need to close Electrum ABC before updating?+
Yes. Quit the running application before launching the new installer. On Windows and macOS, the installer will refuse to overwrite a locked binary. After the update completes, reopen the wallet and unlock it with your password.
How often does Electrum ABC release updates?+
The Electrum ABC team ships a new release a few times a year — typically aligned with eCash network upgrades and major security fixes. Subscribe to the official GitHub releases feed to get notified the moment a new version is tagged.
Can I downgrade to an older version?+
Technically yes, but rarely a good idea. Older versions may not understand current consensus rules or newer wallet-file formats. If you must downgrade, back up your wallet file first and restore from seed into the older version rather than opening the new file directly.
